Travelers and Record Sound System

Located, for its first incarnation, within a disused storefront in downtown Portland, Oregon, Travelers and Record Sound System is a collection point, meditation center, and small frequency radio station for the sounds and songs that possess the moments of our everyday. The songs that get stuck in our heads: Da Do Ron Ron, Visions of Johanna, Hit Me Baby (One More Time); the sounds that we encounter in our homes, or out in the world: the radiator clanking, passing the high school down the street as the school band is practicing Love Rollercoaster, birds in the morning; all get airtime on the Sound System.

The space is both a means for cataloging and sharing these aforementioned songs and sounds, but also a means to use them as a spring board towards discussing how the life and accumulation of these sounds – how they play out within our lives, how they come to us, and leave us, and inform our actions and choices – can be applied as an apt metaphor to help us better understand notions of democracy, prophecy, incantation, and our roles as American citizens.

Stop by anytime to drop off a CD of the songs and sounds that stay with you during the day. We’ll be glad to add them to the playlist to be broadcast throughout downtown Portland. Stay a while and drink some Sun Tea while listening to the collections of fellow Portlanders as we broadcast the chaotic nature of our days.
